Yellowstone National Park — South Entrance Day Trip

Yellowstone’s South Entrance is close enough to make a genuine day trip from Swan Valley, and it delivers everything the park is famous for — geyser basins, technicolor hot springs, and wildlife that stops traffic (literally, for bison). Old Faithful is the obvious anchor, but the nearby Upper Geyser Basin boardwalk lets you see a dozen more geothermal features without much walking. If you have the stamina, continue north toward West Thumb Geyser Basin on Yellowstone Lake, or loop toward the Lower Falls of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone — genuinely one of the best views in the park. Wildlife is most active early morning and near dusk, so a pre-dawn departure pays off if you’re hoping for wolves or grizzlies in the Hayden Valley. Go May through September for full road access; be prepared for crowds at the marquee stops but real solitude just a short walk from any parking lot. Bring water, snacks, and a full tank of gas — services inside the park are limited. It’s a long day, but one of the few places on earth that genuinely lives up to the hype.
