Cave Creek Regional Park

For a gentler dose of the Sonoran Desert than Black Mountain offers, Cave Creek Regional Park is the local favorite. It’s a genuinely large park — over 2,900 acres of desert foothills laced with well-marked trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, ranging from easy loops to more demanding routes for experienced hikers. The scenery is classic Sonoran Desert: towering saguaros, ocotillo, and desert wildflowers in spring, with mountain views throughout. It’s genuinely quieter than the more heavily trafficked Scottsdale preserve trails, which makes it a good pick if you want space to yourself. The park also has a nature center worth a quick stop, and because it sits well outside the Phoenix light dome, it’s one of the better spots in the area for stargazing on a clear night. Spring and fall mornings are ideal; summer visits should happen at sunrise given the heat. There’s a small entrance fee, and the park has restrooms and shaded ramadas if you want to turn a hike into a picnic. It’s an easy, low-key half-day outing — bring the whole group, pick a trail that matches everyone’s energy level, and enjoy some of the best desert scenery close to home.
