Alum Creek State Park

Alum Creek is the local outdoor escape when you want water, trails, or just wide-open space. The reservoir spans over 3,000 acres, ringed by more than 12,000 acres of state park land, and it’s genuinely popular for a reason — swimming beaches, boating, fishing, and a solid network of hiking and mountain biking trails through hardwood forest. The main beach area gets lively in summer, with plenty of room to spread out even on busy weekends. If you’d rather skip the crowds, the park’s trail system offers quieter options through wooded terrain, good for an easy hike or a longer mountain bike ride depending on your group’s energy. Fishing is strong here too — largemouth bass and saugeye are common catches for anglers who bring their own gear. It’s an easy half-day or full-day outing depending on how you use it — pack a cooler, bring towels, and treat it like a proper lake day. Boat rentals are available on-site if you didn’t bring your own. Spring through fall is the sweet spot; summer weekends are busiest, so a weekday visit means more space to yourselves.
